How to use reports from your EPoS system to make more net profit

We had this question in from a new retailer which I thought was worth sharing.

I have taken over a shop with an existing epos system that provides lots of reports, whilst they are interesting what can they really be used for?

There are lots of ways to answer this question. I will look at one of the direct ways in which to utilise this information.

I have no way of measuring hits on my website. What is the best way of tracking performance and what are the main things to look for?

Google Analytics is very good and is free. They have produced it primarily so that those people who use AdWords (the service where you pay Google for every click), to monitor and improve their results. It is in Google’s own interest to do this because if they can help their customers get better results from Google advertising, their customers are more likely to spend more money on it. However Analytics can be used by anyone it just needs some code added into the website.

One approach is to batten down the hatches and hope the cold winds of recession will pass over. An alternative, more proactive approach is to use this time to make the business stronger, more efficient and better equipped to deal with the changing competitive climate in the years to come.

In the first of a series on this blog I will look at how retailers can improve business efficiency though EPoS software and retail technology. The reward for those who get it right is a thriving and more profitable business when the economy turns upwards again.

Intelligent Retail were at Earls Court this week showcasing our multichannel retail EPOS system, which was received very well by both the retailers and technology focussed people we spoke to. The value of stock turn for retailers

Stock turn indicates how quickly a retailer’s stock is sold and then reordered. A simplistic calculation is: Stock turn = Number of items sold ÷ Average stock level. For example. A retailer sells 10,000 items in a year, and on average holds 2,500 items at one time. 10,000 ÷ 2,500 = 4. Therefore the stock turn rate is 4. This means the retailer is carrying 3 months supply.

What is the value of knowing this? Well, there are three main reasons why successful retailers try and achieve the highest possible stock turn rate without having stock outages and disappointed customers.

EPoS Software: Encouraging up-selling and cross-selling

Up-selling and cross-selling are established methods of improving sales and increasing customer loyalty. Up-selling is the practice of offering customers a product in addition to the product they are currently purchasing. Cross-selling refers to selling items that are related or can be integrated with the item being sold. Both techniques can increase sales volume and provide a valuable service to your customers.

A common barrier to up-selling and cross-selling is motivating staff to do it. Computer systems can track ‘average customer spend’ or ‘average number of articles purchased’ and provide reports by sales person.

Average customer spend should have an upward trend and some retailers will constantly look for ways to improve this figure. Up-selling is one of the main ways. Measuring average customer spend regularly for each staff member can identify training needs and allow managers to operate target driven incentive schemes. If the sale of big ticket items gets in the way of this, it may be possible to run the reports only on accessory ranges.

Another method retailers are using is ‘average number of products sold’. It works on the basis that incentivizing staff to sell one more item is better than a looking at average spend. It doesn’t matter how much the additional item sells for, the result in increased profit can be significant. Some feel this approach is easier for the staff to get to grips with, it helps them be creative about what to add on to the sale and gives better value for the customer who has purchased matching accessory that they had not considered.
