We had this question in from a new retailer which I thought was worth sharing.

I have taken over a shop with an existing epos system that provides lots of reports, whilst they are interesting what can they really be used for?

There are lots of ways to answer this question. I will look at one of the direct ways in which to utilise this information.

Overall online spending in 2008 reached record levels for each individual month (IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index). UK shoppers spent over £4.67 billion online in December. This represents an equivalent of £76 for every person in the UK, an increase of 14.2% on December 2007. This growth comes despite the peak internet shopping weekend being on 29th and 30th November.

It’s not just a shop! Using staff for multichannel sales and fulfillment

If the shop has a website or catalogue as well, there is a real opportunity to increase staff productivity. The nature of selling in a shop is it is quite reactive, people have to be on hand for those times customers require service.

Working efficiently with retail technology

There are lots of small repetitive processes in retail, and Electronic Point of Sale (EPoS), or Retail Systems are great at doing small repetitive processes. By reducing the time spent on low value, often repetitive tasks, managers and staff can spend time on more powerful activities to really improve the business.
