So far in this series we have looked at; how consumers buy online, strategies for selling online and advice on choosing a good website design company. The next step in running a successful website is probably the hardest to get right; marketing your website. But when I speak to retailers about selling online, they rarely have any budget for marketing the website. There is almost an expectation that if they build a website people will visit it. I suppose there can be an element of truth in this, but typically for new websites if they don’t have any marketing sales will remain low for quite some time.

I have no way of measuring hits on my website. What is the best way of tracking performance and what are the main things to look for?

Google Analytics is very good and is free. They have produced it primarily so that those people who use AdWords (the service where you pay Google for every click), to monitor and improve their results. It is in Google’s own interest to do this because if they can help their customers get better results from Google advertising, their customers are more likely to spend more money on it. However Analytics can be used by anyone it just needs some code added into the website.

Internet sales continue to rise

Internet sales are still continuing to rise. IMRG, the eCommerce industry body reported that internet sales rose year on year 19% in January, 12% in February and 15% on average over the last 6 months. This is less than the growth seen in previous years, but still notable in the current recession and according to James Roper the Chief Executive at IMRG this growth will “stay steady”.

What has helped to drive this growth is the availability of high speed broadband. 58% of British homes now have broadband and this figure is set to rise with the government launching the Digital Britain Report which sets out a way to bring advanced digital communications to all. This will drive more growth in internet retailing.

David Mackley MD at Intelligent Retail commented; "The internet has become a part of everyday life for UK consumers and for many is an integral part of their shopping routine. The internet is not all about low cost discounting, there are many different strategies retailers can use to increase business. Retailers who only have shop premises are missing out on a huge change in consumer shopping habits, whereas multichannel retailers are winning in this touch climate."

Retailers should take a strategic approach to going online and multichannel

If the word strategy feels a bit grand, it shouldn’t. A strategy is just a plan that fits your business. It gives a business focus and direction, a sense of purpose. You don’t need to create a 30 page business plan, a business strategy can be jotted down on a single page of A4. In my experience, small retailers rarely have written strategies unless they are just starting out. Yet it doesn’t take that long to create one and it can have a huge impact on success. It also has a positive impact on morale because it feels like the company is going somewhere and not just ‘same old’.

Overall online spending in 2008 reached record levels for each individual month (IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index). UK shoppers spent over £4.67 billion online in December. This represents an equivalent of £76 for every person in the UK, an increase of 14.2% on December 2007. This growth comes despite the peak internet shopping weekend being on 29th and 30th November.
