How independent retailers can use Google to their advantage

Google is the new yellow pages.
According to the Dept. for National Statistics 2008 survey, 16 million households in Great Britain (65 per cent) had Internet access. With fifty-six per cent of all UK households had a broadband connection in 2008, up from 51 per cent in 2007. Also most office workers sit for most of the day in a PC. This PC will have an internet connection and it is likely that Google will be the preferred search engine. Those in the market for your products may well use Google to type in the name of their town and the goods they are after. Have you tried it for your town. Are you making it easy for new customers to find you?

THe same survey shows that 71% of adults in the UK have used the internet in the last 3 months. If you sell to 16-44 year olds then 90% of this age group have used the internet in the last 3 months, with 77 per cent using it every day or almost every day. One of the main uses of the internet is to search for information about products and services with 84% saying this is their number one activity online.

Having established that your customers are likely to look at the internet for information on products, what can you do that will be a benefit to them. Well to start with, how about posting the most important product information or advice related to products on your website? No need to type War and Peace. Just by providing simple links with a short introduction to good online resources will be really useful. Where you have these links you can copy some of the salient points from the target site and link to it for more information. It doesn’t have to be written by you. By the way, if the companies you link to reciprocate, it will really help your Google rankings. As a local expert, your customers will see the information and links you provide as instantly credible.
